The Alfa Romeo SE 048SP was initially developed as a substitute for the Lancia LC2 within the Group C racing class, following the revamp of laws in 1990. Whereas just one working prototype was ever constructed, the automotive boasted spectacular options, together with the identical 3.5 V10 engine discovered within the Alfa Romeo 164 Procar.

Fiat, which owned Alfa Romeo, made the choice to shift focus to Alfa Romeo for Group C racing, as Lancia had turned its consideration to the WRC with the Delta Integrale, whereas Ferrari was closely invested in Method 1. Regardless of the undertaking being shrouded in secrecy, it was revealed that the SE048SP used a naturally aspirated V10 engine that had been initially designed for the Ligier F1 group. The engine boasted a claimed output of 620 hp at 13,300 RPM, making it a robust contender on this planet of racing.

Though the SE 048SP was believed to have been in-built 1990, an official construct date was by no means confirmed. The automotive was later exhibited on the Alfa Romeo Museo Storico, the place it was ultimately fitted with a 3.5-litre Ferrari V12 engine boasting a claimed output of 680 hp at 12,750 RPM. This will have been as a result of V10 engine’s fragility, which had been found throughout testing on the “Abarth SE047,” a re-engined Lancia LC2 used as a test-bed for the SE 048SP undertaking.

Finally, the funds allotted for the SE 048SP was redirected in the direction of the Alfa Romeo 155 Touring Automobile program, which resulted in quite a few nationwide championships, together with the DTM in 1993 and the BTCC in 1994.
